Tutorial with Frances Tempest

Today I had a tutorial with Frances Tempest its was a really fascinating tutorial but it was a shame that we didn't have a lot to talk about. She initially gave me some pointers for filming, like pay attention to any small detail, as any other people most probably wont pay any attention to costume hair and make up. Them we talked about the painting photo shoot, she liked my idea of manipulating the concept of the painting and she told me to keep control of the lighting because that could be a very decisive thing in the whole likeness of the painting.

Film brief

Today we had our first meeting with the film student, and we sat in their brief. Most of the brief was targeted on the film students and the way they can approach their ideas. it was interesting to see that the film tutors and students were really exited on having to collaborate with the costume students. the most interesting part of the brief was watching previous movies of the same project. The films were so interesting and inspirational, they gave me a new urge to work on this project.

Books for learning agreements

For my leaning agreements I had to find 5 books that would help me with my project throughout. I choose
P. De Rynck's  How to Read a Painting and Signs and Symbols in Christian Art, and The National Gallery Companion Guide which could help me analyze the paintings in a more insightful level. also for my photoshoot I want to use making faces and Ricci &Capricci for hair and make up.

Visiting The National Gallery

After I visiting the national gallery, and the national portrait gallery I am quite overwhelmed as there are so many paintings I want to work with.
I really like the idea of playing with colours, and trying to relate with the impressionist style with the fabrics-textiles and the style of the photo shoot

I liked that painting and again it would have been interesting to play around with the impressionist style and also I like the idea of playing with modern and historical underwear

I have always loved this painting the draping of the fabric the lighting and the energy have always captivated me

this painting has beautiful dressing and captivating colours

The painting that caught my attention more, was "A Personification of Fame by"  Bernardo Strozzi. It wasn't the painting as much but the symbolism behind it that  made me decide on using it for  part one of my project.

Painting as inspiration

For my SDP I choose to do a project in association with the film students, in which they will have to create a film based on a painting from the national gallery. The project is divided into 2 parts, one individually directed and one in collaboration with film students. In the first part of the project I will visit the national gallery and the national portrait gallery and choose a painting myself to recreate in a photo shoot. Part 1 has £0 budget so I will have to be inventive with my resources. In part 2 I will work with film students from BA (Hons) Film course. The film students will choose a painting from the national gallery and taking inspiration from it they will create a script for a 3-minute movie. For some of those movies I will design and source costumes.
The film schedule is quite tightly put together, but also quite latter on in SDP , so I want to have the photo shoot all finished and done with by the time the meetings with the film students start, so I'm planing to visit the national gallery during the first week of SDP and choose my painting. During that first week I also want to get my Learning Agreements started.
I am quite intimidated by the fact that after after the films are assigned we have only a couple of days before the holidays, and after holidays filming starts immediately, so before I will even meet the film students I will try to research the national gallery paintings so I have quite a bit of knowledge around them.
